Only by making sure that a child’s basic needs are taken care of can they genuinely prosper. Terre des Hommes works towards a world where every child has access to sufficient food, education and healthcare – setting them up to achieve all they can in life.
In Burkina Faso, Terre des Hommes (Lausanne) was instrumental in convincing and helping the government to provide free healthcare for pregnant women and children under five. The legislation was signed in spring 2016 after years of campaigning, and will save numerous children’s lives in areas where parents could not afford to see a doctor. This would not have been successful without a parallel campaign to provide electronic tablets and a mobile app to Burkinabé doctors, to help them diagnose their child patients' medical problems.
Education also plays a huge role in enabling children to have a brighter future. Terre des Hommes (Italy) has had major success helping to provide inclusive education in East Jerusalem, by promoting a system that embraces diversity and tackles discrimination. The project has helped over 2,000 schoolchildren and their parents by providing multisensory learning rooms, extracurricular activities and online forums for teachers to share best teaching practices in English and Arabic.
Terre des Hommes (Lausanne) has opened a training center in Korogocho, one of the largest slums in Nairobi, Kenya. The centre trained over 1,000 parents, techers and officials on child protection and child rights in 2016, to combat the violence and exploitation faced by children living in the slum. Out-of-school activities also taught children about the rights they have, and improved their social skills, with Terre des Hommes (Lausanne) providing food and other basc needs to at-risk families.
Children’s access to education has also been improved in India. Terre des Hommes (Denmark) has given scholarships and sponsorships allowing children to eat, learn and receive medical care such as vaccinations. Roopali*, a schoolgirl from Mumbai, is receiving a scholarship to study advanced IT classes, and hopes these lessons will help her fulfil her dream of becoming a computer analyst. She says: “Due to my family circumstances, I face a lot of difficulties getting an education. However, thanks to Terre des Hommes’ help, my dream of becoming a computer analyst could become a reality.”
